How to Create Margin in Your Life as a Christian Woman

In this post, Dr. Stephanie Carter shares her personal struggle with time management and five faith-based steps that will help you create margin in your life as a Christian woman.

I’ll be honest: I’m tired.

Not the kind of tired a nap can fix. The kind of tired that comes from running nonstop and feeling like you’re never really getting anywhere.

My calendar is full.

My to-do list is never-ending.

All my goals? Dreams? They’re still there, but buried deep under responsibilities, expectations, and obligations.

Maybe you can relate.

As I sat with the Lord recently, I realized something painful—I have no margin in my life.

Not for myself. Not for rest or for dreaming. And not even for truly hearing from God the way I used to.

And I knew something had to change. Are you there? Have you been there?

This post is not a list of quick tips from someone who has it all figured out. It’s a personal confession. But it’s also an invitation—to slow down, take a deep breath, and begin the journey of reclaiming margin.

What is Margin & Why Does it Matter?

Margin is the space on the edge of the paper outside the line. But it is also the space between your load and your limit. It’s breathing room. It’s having enough time, energy, and emotional bandwidth to show up fully for your life, your calling, and your God.

Without margin, we say yes when we should say no.
Without margin, we serve others while silently resenting them.
Without margin, we lose sight of who we are and what we’re here for. Without margin we are not in peace.

Proverbs 17:1 says, “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.”

That verse hit me hard. I’ve had plenty of “feasting”—busy schedules, productivity, accomplishments. But peace? That was missing.

My Wake-Up Call

One day, I found myself snapping at someone I love for asking for something small. Not because they were wrong—but because I had nothing left to give. Every ounce of me was already spoken for.

That’s when I knew: this isn’t sustainable. I can’t glorify God when I’m burned out, overwhelmed, and spiritually dry. I need margin, not just for rest—but for obedience.

I had to get honest with God and ask myself: What am I choosing that’s costing me my peace?

5 steps to create margin in your life

5 Faith-Based Steps to Create Margin in Your Life

If you’re like me—stretched thin and longing for more space in your life—here are five steps I’m walking out to create more margin, rooted in faith and grace:

1.) Start with Prayer and Surrender

Before making changes, I had to surrender the idol of busyness. I asked God: “What have I taken on that You didn’t assign to me?”  Huge question, right?

Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” Margin begins when we give God permission to reorder our lives.

2.) Audit Your Time with Honesty

I tracked how I spent my days for one week. The truth? I had time—but it was scattered in scroll holes, unplanned errands, and people-pleasing yeses.

So, take inventory ladies. What’s draining you? What’s fruitful? What’s just noise?

3.) Learn the Power of  No

Saying no is not selfish—it’s stewardship. No is not a bad word. Jesus Himself often withdrew to quiet places (Luke 5:16). If Jesus protected His time, why do we think we don’t have to?

Give yourself permission to say no—even to good things—protect your time so you can say yes to the right things.

4.) Create a Sabbath Rhythm

I realized I wasn’t honoring Sabbath in any meaningful way. Not resting, not worshiping, not refueling. Now, I block out one day a week for rest—even if it’s just a few hours. That sacred space has become my margin lifeline.

5.) Protect Time for Your Dreams

God gave you those dreams on purpose. Write the book. Start the ministry. Launch the blog. Live your dream. Stop making everyone else’s dream come true.

If you wait for life to slow down, you’ll never begin. Now I set aside 30 minutes a day just to work on what God has put on my heart. That small choice is restoring my joy.

Surrendering Your Schedule

Finally, margin is a form of worship. Getting more margin in your life isn’t just about better time management—it’s about trust. It’s about believing that God can do more with your surrendered “less” than you ever could with your overextended “more.”

I’m still learning, still repenting, still fighting for space. But each time I choose margin, I feel God’s presence a little more clearly. And that is worth everything.

My dear sister, if you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, and secretly wondering if this is just how life is—I want to tell you it’s not. You were made for more than surviving.

You were made to thrive, rest, and walk in purpose. God made you to live with margin.

  1. I struggle in this area. I have been saying that I am downright exhausted for weeks. I wake up everyday sore and feel like I could sleep forever…. Even on the mornings after I get to sleep all night. I find so much joy in every day and honestly most of the time i go to bed exhausted but happy. I think it’s time to put a little margin in my life so that I don’t lose that joy.

  2. Caylin, so glad you are enjoying life and yes a little margin is good so you do no burnout. Find where you can do that and make it a priority.
