3 Powerful Truths to Remember When You Feel Unwanted
Have you ever felt unwanted? If so, you’re not alone. Shirley Desmond Jackson shares powerful truths from God’s Word to remember when you feel unwanted below.
Slowly I reread the personal note attached to the invitation. The hostess apologized for the late notice. “I have no idea why your invitation didn’t go out with the others,” she added, “but I really hope you can make it.”
I already knew about the social gathering. Mutual friends—those with invitations—had talked about it openly. As I listened to their chatter, I tried to hide my hurt feelings behind a smile.
Now, several days later, the invitation had come. “Was this an afterthought?” I wondered, “Or was it truly a careless mistake or a technical malfunction?”
Feeling Unwanted
Suddenly I wasn’t just thinking about this invitation. Other painful memories flooded my soul:
- the year my friends forgot my birthday
- the evening my husband and I were excluded from an elegant church party
- the time I was invited to an event only because another person couldn’t attend
Each time I was forgotten, left out, or invited as an afterthought, I suffered the special heartache of feeling unwanted. In those moments I questioned my worth—and believed I was somehow unloveable.
With maturity, however, I’ve gained a new perspective. Friends forget birthdays because they are distracted with their own struggles and busy lives. Snobbery often cloaks insecurity. And technological glitches do occasionally, and inexplicably, drop texts and emails. But this understanding didn’t erase my hurt.
3 Powerful Truths to Remember When You Feel Unwanted
When I took my bruised heart to the Lord, His Holy Spirit reminded me of these verses:
Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. Ephesians 1:4-5 NLT

These verses contain three powerful truths:
God already loved us when He created the world.
For years I’ve missed this detail. I read the creation account and understood God created man as part of the process. Yet these verses indicate we came first—God held us in His heart and mind before He ever laid the foundations of the universe. Then He created everything around us—a world full of variety, beauty, and purpose.
God then devoted this same care and attention to detail when He brought us to life. King David describes it this way, “you [God] knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 119:13 NIV). David’s imagery describes God as an artist who intentionally and skillfully forms each of us. In His hands we are never an afterthought—we are both perfectly planned and deeply loved.
God deliberately chose us to be adopted into His family.
Adoption in our culture can sometimes be perceived as second best, where biological children are seen as the preferred choice. But in these verses God’s heart reveals the opposite to be true. He has always wanted us to be part of His family—to be His chosen children.
Our adoption was made possible only by the sacrifice of God’s natural son, Jesus. As members of God’s family, we not only enjoy an intimate relationship with our Father, but we also became co-heirs with Jesus (Romans 8:15-18). God has held nothing back—He wants us to enjoy the full blessings of being His children.
God delights in blessing us.
Because of past experiences, I still struggle to trust the sincerity of invitations—even when they come from the Lord. I can wonder if He feels obligated to include me. But in these verses God gives us a beautiful assurance. He loves us, chooses us, and adopts us simply because it makes Him happy.
Jesus said it this way: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32 NIV). God has made it very clear—He wants to include us. We never have to question His sincerity.
At some point in our lives we will know the pain from feeling unwanted. It is a natural consequence of living in a broken world with imperfect people. But when this happens, we can turn to Jesus for the healing we need.

I am so sorry you experienced that. Churches are made up of sinful people, but that doesn’t excuse what you experience. They were wrong. But not everyone is like that. There are good pastors and bad pastors, but no perfect pastors. The same with churches. I hope you find a place in the body of Christ where the people love you like Jesus you. Praying for you today.
I smile thinking about being adopted into His family as mine wasn’t the best, LOL! Thanks Shirley for this reminder!
