Sharing My Faith: How to Talk the Walk

Sharing My Faith was written by the host of Lyric and Letter, Rebecca Lane

I used to think sharing my faith meant standing in front of a crowd, telling my testimony from start to finish, and having some big, life-changing moment. But I’ve learned that sharing Jesus isn’t always that dramatic—it’s often found in the small, everyday moments.

  • It’s in a text message to a friend who’s struggling.
  • It’s in a social media post about what God is teaching you.
  • It’s in an honest conversation over coffee.

Sharing My Faith

For me, it started with Lyric and Letter: Where Worship Meets the Word. It wasn’t just about sharing my story of healing and sobriety—it was about filling the empty space sobriety left behind. I wanted to bridge my love for worship and God’s Word, exploring how the songs we sing shape our faith and how Scripture breathes life into our worship. What began as my own journey turned into an invitation for others to walk alongside me, to explore Scripture, and to see how God moves through music, words, and everyday life.

And here’s what I’ve learned: your story matters, too.

Maybe you don’t have a podcast. Maybe you don’t write or sing or teach. But you have a testimony. And when we share what God has done in our lives, we’re not just telling a story—we’re pointing people to Jesus.

Why Sharing Your Story is a Form of Discipleship

I think sometimes we overcomplicate the idea of discipleship. We imagine it as formal, structured, something that requires a title or a position in ministry. But that’s not what Jesus modeled.

Jesus discipled by walking with people. He shared meals. Told stories. Invited people into His life. And before He ascended, He left us with this:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV)

That wasn’t a suggestion. It was a command. And it wasn’t just for pastors or missionaries—it was for all of us.

Discipleship is simply walking with others in faith. Sometimes that looks like leading a Bible study or mentoring someone younger in the faith. Other times, it looks like sharing your testimony—whether that’s on a podcast, in a blog post, or over coffee with a friend.

What God has done in your life isn’t just for you. It’s meant to be shared.

Keeping It Rooted in Scripture

Of course, our stories are powerful, but they’re not the source of truth—God’s Word is. When we share our journey, it should always be grounded in Scripture, pointing people back to Jesus, not just our own experiences.

Colossians 3:16 reminds us:

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another…” (NIV)

It’s great to share what God is doing in your life, but always bring it back to Scripture. A story about your struggles can be encouraging, but a story paired with truth from the Bible? That’s life-changing.

Start Small, But Start

You don’t need a microphone or a blog to share your faith. Just start where you are:

  • Send a text with a Bible verse that’s been on your heart.
  • Post a simple thought on Instagram about what God is teaching you.
  • Invite a friend to church.
  • Pray with someone instead of just saying, “I’ll pray for you.”

Someone out there needs the hope you carry. So don’t overthink it. Just talk your walk.

  1. Enjoyed reading your blog Sharing my Faith. How to talk the Walk. At times, we Christians have the misconception that serving the Lord in some ministry or in the mission field is considered as a worthy service. As you’ve written, simple acts of grace we show towards someone known or unknown is seen as valuable in God’s eyes. Whatever we do on a daily life is done as a worship to the Lord, we do not need to worry about walking the talk because our talk would automatically become our walk.
    Blessings.
