Our Only Hope to Avoid Hell is Jesus
I was crying over a Facebook comment on a post I didn’t post, about an article I didn’t write.
Romans 12:18 says we should do our best to live at peace with those around us so far as it depends on us. Thus, I generally try to avoid social media arguments.
Now, I’m far from perfect. I definitely read, write, and delete more than my fair share of social media commentary. However, you won’t often find me getting on a soapbox or ranting about pet peeves. It’s one of those areas where I try to catch myself before it’s too late.
Anyway, this was one of those times.
Here’s What Happened…
A friend of mine posted an article writing, “Stories that pro abortionists don’t want you to hear…”
The brief article was about a teen girl who regretted getting an abortion. It detailed why she felt she had to get an abortion, the process she went through, and the moment she realized it was a mistake. It was vivid and succinct.
The author of the article didn’t share an opinion one way or another about abortion. There wasn’t anything beyond the account of what happened. It was what it was, and nothing more.
The comment on my friend’s post (the one that left me in tears) was this, “That is now her burden to bear… The only thing to save her from Hell is to confess and repent, then do penance.”
That comment rocked me to my core.
I read the back and forth between the commenter and a couple of my friends.
I wrote out a few replies before deleting them.
Then I tried to explain to my husband why I was crying over a Facebook post.
If you add Facebook, abortion, and religious differences together you get a powder keg. I'm not trying to fuel the fire, but this needs to be said… Click To TweetRelated Post: Grace & Truth After Abortion As A Christian Woman
Our Only Hope is in Jesus
Now, I feel like it’s important to say that I have friends from multiple denominations, and we vary on what we believe. I know lots of bloggers and other professionals who I respect, who have different views on spiritual matters. Mutual respect is important, regardless of what we believe.
In Romans 12, Paul wrote that we should love each other as we are all members of the same body. However, that one comment on Facebook showed me just how different our faiths can be. Please keep that in mind as you read what I’m about to write (and know that I write it in love).
Because here’s the thing: Our only hope to avoid Hell is Jesus.
If Jesus is the Lord of your life, you are free of your past. Your sins—past, present, and future—are forgiven. He paid for them all upon the cross.
We are saved by God’s grace. God sent Jesus to die for us because He loves us. We can’t earn that, it’s a free gift. And knowing that is so freeing. It gives hope where there once was none.
We don’t have to worry about if we’ve done enough, because Jesus was enough for us. Jesus is enough for us.
Jesus said His yoke is easy, and His burden is light (Matt. 11:30). When we know the truth, it will set us free (Jn 8:31-36). We will be free from sin; from condemnation (Rom. 8:1). Free from penance (Gal. 2:16). Because if we have been set free, we should not put ourselves under the burden of slavery again (Gal. 5:1).
In Galatians Paul wrote that we shouldn’t accept any other gospel than that (Chap 1).
The freedom we have because of Christ gives us hope.
That’s what was missing when I read the comment on Facebook.
Hope.

Jesus is Enough
If a life trying to make up for the sins of our past was all our faith had to offer…
If Jesus wasn’t enough…
If that was where life left us, I would feel pretty hopeless. Discouraged.
I don’t know who you are or what you believe, but if you’ve read this far, I want you to know that there is hope because Jesus is enough.
No matter what you’ve done in your life, Jesus paid for it all when He died on the cross.
Nothing you can do will earn you a spot in Heaven.
You either belong to Jesus or you don’t.
And I hope you do.
