Grace and Truth to Cling to the Cross

“You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.”

Deuteronomy 13:4

One of my favorite hymns is The Old Rugged Cross, by George Bennard. As I sing along “I will cling to the old rugged cross...”, I see myself on my knees, clinging to a splintered, weathered square pole, His feet just above me. My throat seizes mid-note, and all I can do is listen to the rest “… and exchange it someday for a crown.”

But do you know how to cling to Someone you can’t see or touch?

All my life, I’ve struggled with a God who feels so far away. I love Deborah Haddix’s post,  7 Practical Ways to Focus Daily on the Cross of Christ, because she provides a list of ways to touch, see, read, speak, and hear the cross. Her title says she offers 7 ways, but for each suggestion, she includes several examples.

My favorite is “Don’t forget the past, your past… remember and reflect on the work of the Cross and how it has changed you.” I know where I was, but now I know Who’s I am, and that’s why I cling to the old rugged cross.

Before you visit Deborah, I’d like to offer four more scriptures to encourage you to cling to the cross today. After you read her post, come back and let us know what you thought and link up your own faith-filled posts. I’ve also included my favorite version of The Old Rugged Cross by Alan Jackson.

  1. Thank you, Valerie, for sharing. My heart was encouraged this morning by your reflections on the cross and the beautiful Scriptures about clinging. May we grow ever closer to God, His mercy, grace, and love, as we learn to focus on the cross of Christ, not only at Easter, but daily. Have a blessed Easter weekend, my friend.
