The Love of a Savior

The love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
1 John 4:9
Many of us as children made our own little dolls, puppets, or action figures out of things like socks, paper bags, Legos, or popsicle sticks. The little toy people were fun to play with for a time, but eventually the once loved image of our own making got stepped on, lost, or destroyed by the shifting weight of the toy box.
Do you remember how disappointing it was to find another one of your creations destroyed?
But what if you could save them all from their own destruction?
What resources would you sacrifice to save them?
Fortunately, we can save them. All we need to do handle them with care and spend the money and time to store them in safe containers.
But why bother?
They’ll never appreciate our efforts, they’re just not made to last that long, and we can always make another one. The truth is we just don’t care enough to save the very things we created.
God’s Agape Love
But the Bible says that God loves the people He created so much that there’s nothing He won’t sacrifice to save us from ourselves and each other.
Love—that’s the mark of a genuine savior.
Jesus taught us this when He gave everything to save us from ourselves, regardless of who we are, because that’s just who He is.
In the Bible, the Greek word for this kind of love is agape. The word agape is only used in reference to God’s love for His people, perhaps in part because only God could bridle His very identity as the Creator and become one of His own creations, all to save us from ourselves, knowing exactly how it would play out for Him.

Prayer
Jesus, “thank you” sounds so little compared to how much You gave for us, but we’ll never be able to repay You for Your sacrifice. Humans are fragile and temporary creations and you can make as many of us as You want, but You gave up who You are as God and all the splendor of heaven for us. Please help us remember why You left paradise to join our little toybox and continue to show us how to love You and one another as You love us. Amen.
