Finding Comfort in Jesus When Your Heart Is Broken
Finding comfort in Jesus works because only the Creator of our hearts can put the pieces back together again.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV
The pitch-blackness of the closet did nothing to hide my pain, nor did the confined space muffle the sounds of my gut-wrenching cries.
My heart was shattered like broken glass, never to be put back together again.
Where does one start to pick up the pieces?
Who fixes shattered glass?
Only our original Creator would know how to put the shards of my broken heart together again. After all, He designed it.

Trust the Experts
If our car breaks down and leaves us stranded on the side of the road, we call a mechanic.
When our refrigerator sounds like a helicopter taking off in our kitchen, we call an appliance repairman.
If we are sick, we call the doctor.
We know who to call when we need something fixed. Yet, do we know whom to call upon to fix our broken hearts?
We try to find comfort in many ways, yet all are temporary. Eventually, we will feel empty and exhausted, still trying to pick up the shattered pieces of our hearts.
No man holds the power to bind shattered glass back together apart from God. Some broken glass can be temporarily fixed with epoxies and adhesives, but it will not be the same as the original. There will still be evidence of cracks, points of weakness, and seams that don’t match.
God Can
God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). He heals the brokenhearted and binds up our wounds (Psalm 147:3). God has told us in His Word; we don’t need to look further. He is the original creator of our hearts; He holds the tools and the blueprints.
As I sat in the darkness of my closet, I called out to Jesus. I craved to feel the warmth of His light and the comfort of His arms. I needed a secure bandage to bind my heart until God permanently heals all our broken hearts (Rev. 21:4).
Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 that God is the God of all comfort who comforts us in our troubles. We have to seek His promised comfort first, above all else.
Finding Comfort in Jesus
After my cries ended that day in my closet, I stood on wobbly legs and slowly opened the door, adjusting my eyes to the light. Jesus wiped my tears, and He bound my broken heart. I did not leave the shattered pieces of glass behind in the closet. I gave them to Jesus.
I would love to tell you my heart was instantly healed. It was not. Jesus’ way of beautifully fixing a broken heart is a journey. It takes time, His time. I did not call out to Jesus one time. I called out to Him every day, many times a day.
Sisters, let’s not offer our broken hearts to the world. Trust Jesus with your broken heart, and let the original creator do His job.
There will come a day when you realize the bandage binding your heart together is no longer needed, and Jesus has taken you from shattered pieces to beautifully fixed.
