Don’t Get Slammed By A Scam

Has your phone ever rung, but when you go to answer the call, your screen says, “Suspected Scam?” I’m grateful for this technology because it saves you from answering a phone call that chances are is a devised scheme of someone that wants to take advantage of you.

A Serious Phone Call

However, the scammers on the other end are using better technology to get you to answer the call. Recently, I had a friend who received a phone call that she thought was from the police department. She thought maybe something had happened in her family and she answered the call.

On the other end was a person saying they were a police officer calling to tell her that her grandchild was in trouble and needed money to be bailed out of jail. He proceeded to tell her he could take a credit card over the phone and then they could release her grandchild.

Lots of Questions

She said the caller was very convincing and she was ready to give her credit card number until she started asking more questions. The situation was very out of character for this grandchild, but she also knew no one was above the possibility of making a bad choice. However, the caller became more agitated and frustrated because she kept asking questions the officer couldn’t answer.

The Gig is Up!

She proceeded to tell the “police officer” she would call her daughter, the mother of the grandchild in question to see what was going on and wondered why the police department had called her instead of the parents. The caller then tried to put more pressure on her until she said, ” I’m going to call my daughter first and I will call you back. Immediately, the caller hung up because they knew their gig was over.

She called her daughter to explain what had happened and her daughter said this particular grandchild was sitting next to her on the couch watching a movie. My friend knew at that point she was being scammed.

The Enemy is a Scammer!

This is exactly how the enemy scams us daily. The enemy takes what he knows from our past because he can’t tell the present or the future and is constantly trying to scam us from our relationship with Jesus. However, there is no bail money to be paid because Jesus paid the price, and we were released from our spiritual prison over two thousand years ago.

Search for the Truth

The important thing to remember is to keep searching for the truth. The enemy loves to lie to us and about us. This is why we need the Holy Spirit to discern for us and remind us about God’s truth through His Word. The more time we spend in His Word, the less chance we have of being scammed by the ultimate scammer.

3 Ways to Know You are Being Scammed

Here are three ways you can tell you are being scammed by the enemy.

1. The enemy will tell you God doesn’t love you because of what you have done.

God may be sad and disappointed, but His love is unconditional, and He proved His love by sending His son, Jesus, to take your place on the cross.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

2. God will never call you names, such as worthless or stupid.

You are worth everything to Him. He created you for His glory. His greatest joy is to see His children THRIVE in relationship with Him.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Psalm 139:13-14

3. When the truth doesn’t align with God’s Word you are being scammed.

The enemy tried to scam Jesus three times by taking God’s Word out of context by tempting Jesus in various ways, but Jesus kept reciting the Word of Truth versus the lies of the enemy.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

 Matthew 4:4

The Enemy Scammed His Own!

The enemy even scammed his own kind! When Satan left heaven, he took a bunch of angels with him and duped them into believing he was the better choice, but they have been chained in darkness ever since.

And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling–these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

Jude 1:6

We All Have Been Scammed

We all have been scammed at one time or another. For years I allowed myself to be scammed by the enemy by not allowing myself to believe that God loved me for who I am and not what I did or didn’t do.  Sometimes, it has cost us dearly, but we don’t have to be at the hands of the scammer any longer, because if Jesus resides in your heart, you have the Holy Spirit who will help you from being scammed.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me

John 10:27-28

Best Way to Fight a Scam

The best way to combat the scammer is through prayer and reading His Word. The more we talk to God the more we know His voice and we become more confident in knowing when a scammer is trying to steal our joy and truth from us. Remember, the enemy is an impersonator, just like the man on the other end of the phone line. The important thing to remember is who is the voice of truth and don’t get slammed by a scam!
