A World Without Jesus

Jesus is the Answer

For he (God) is not a man, as I am, that I might answer him,
that we should come to trial together.
There is no arbiter between us,
who might lay his hand on us both.
Let him take his rod away from me,
and let not dread of him terrify me.
Then I would speak without fear of him,
for I am not so in myself.

Job 9:32-35

Imagine a world with no hope or peace. You are always alone and fearful, with nothing to look forward to. Imagine a world of no love or joy. It’s every man for himself and there is no forgiveness, only sorrow.

Imagine a world without Jesus.

A World Without Jesus

Job, the main character in the Book of Job, is the biblical poster child for undeserved loss and suffering. Unfortunately, he lived before Christ came as God to live with us, before the Prince of Peace restored us, before our Savior loved us, and before anyone knew God’s forgiveness.

Left with nothing but grief, pain, three friends equally clueless friends, and a traumatized wife, Job longed for an arbitrator to intercede for him. He mourned for someone worthy to approach God on his behalf, ask questions, and find some measure of meaning and comfort. But Job was alone.

Jesus is the Answer

Matthew 1:1 introduces us to Job’s answered prayer: Jesus Christ. Friends, “Christ” is not Jesus’s last name. It means Jesus is the Messiah, anointed by God to restore us to the Father.

Thankfully, we’ll never know what it feels like to have no connection to the very source of hope, peace, love, and joy. But perhaps we should close our eyes for a moment and imagine life without Jesus. Then, open your eyes, look toward our nativity, turn to the cross, and then fill this church with praise for Emmanuel, the Prince of Peace, the Savior, the King of Kings, Jesus Christ!

Jesus, help us to appreciate the sacrifice you made in coming to earth as a human. Life can be hard, but we always have You with us. Thank you for the blessings of Christmas, for Your love, and for the hope, peace, and joy of spending life on earth and eternity with You. Amen.
